From RickD, commenting on Pharyngula:
"It seems sad to me that the ferocious god of the Old Testament has been reduced to a god of the gaps hiding in quantum mechanics. Where's the fire and brimstone? Where are the pillars of salt? Where are the fiery ladders from heaven? The burning bushes? The parting seas?"
That's one reason I can't take a lot of "he's already proved his existence in a vague, unspecified way" and "you'll find out when you're dead and in torment" comments when I ask for spectacular, decisive evidence of a deity's existence, like RickD is. What's so different these days that prevents the various deities from showing off like they allegedly did in the olden days?

My co-blogger Ben was just telling me about this last night. If I recall correctly, it's all the fault of philosophers. The Jews discovered the Hellenistic philosophers and said, "Hey, this stuff is pretty cool. Our Judaism looks really stupid in comparison." So they deliberately went about changing their religious structure to encompass more secular philosophy. And that's how a fairly unremarkable storm god changed into the all-encompassing, mysterious, vague God we know today.

Simple. We no longer confuse "crazy" with "divinely inspired".
And God damn you for making me sign up with the Borg to post this comment!

They died. just kidding.
Yes, I often like to raise this question to the theist as well, in which I then watch them fumble upon various attempts of misdirection to avoid ever really answering the question.

Yeah, I figured something like that.
I was previously commenting under the name "Dunc", if anyone cares.
I've re-enabled the anonymous comments again, experimentally. Hopefully, those bots are done passing through.
You can go back to being Dunc, now.
