Pointless Question #24

I've turned out a couple duds in this series, but I feel better about this one:

So, you're a mad scientist with an affinity for building robot armies. They've got an arsenal of laser cannons, chainsaws for hands, and one big glowing red eye that can rotate towards the camera to glow menacingly.

Did you forget to include something for depth perception?

My bet is on a radar/sonar type affair. Particularly, since they're mostly red, an infra-red beam that doesn't reveal itself to puny human eyes and has the added bonus of working as a targeting laser.

Plus, you get to save money on hardware this way!

Those aren't eyes, they are LEDs. The ACTUAL detectors you're too distracted to notice.

Oh, there are monocular cues to depth perception: motion parallax and relative size, to name two. But sure, you could go with retinal disparity if you wanted to take the easy way...

I'm with Dark Jaguar - the big glowy target thingy's not an eye, it's a decoy.

But if it's just a decoy, then how come shooting and shattering it burns out the robot?

The reason shooting the decoy makes the robot "die" is because you're a mad scientist: you aren't thinking about the consequences of sticking the robot's "brain" in the decoy.

Of course the first robots that come to mind for me are the "reaverbots" in Megaman Legends. There most of the robots aren't really built for combat, they just sort of had mental breakdowns due to being activated for thousands of years after their builders left the planet behind.

Well, looks like no one got one of the answers I was thinking of: "How do you expect the heroes to fight through your armies of mooks if they actually have good depth perception?"
