Random Recall #9: Monkeys!

Kid's cartoon back in the 80's. The cast consisted of some monkeys with evil counterparts with blue-purple fur. I vaguely remember two episodes: 1) One of the reluctant mooks of the villain got disguised as one of the good monkeys, and gets attached, eventually doing a Heel Face Turn and joining the cast as one of the regular brown-furred monkeys. 2) One-shot villain comes in and gains magical control over some of the cast, turning them into angular, blocky statues or something and ordered them to steal stuff. I suspect the latter was a dream I had about the series way back when.

That doesn't sound nearly as weird as some of my dreams. They have a tendency to shift randomly to various strange places. I'm pretty sure I had at least one involving the X-Men, gundams, and an army of technicolor ninjas that actually called themselves the Army of Technicolor Ninjas. Also, they had pirate ships.

Yeah, it doesn't live up to my usual weirdness, but this wasn't presented as a solid example as it might have been an actual episode.

All I remember in terms of recent Really Weird Dreams™ is, after getting partway through John Dies At The End, thinking "I stayed up until three AM reading this. I am going to have horrible, horrible nightmares. And there will be dongs." Cue a dream about robotics that cast me as a lighter and softer version of Dr. Horrible, more or less, doing stuff in Texachusetts, Greece.

Sadly, I wasn't alive in the eighties (unless you want to argue a lot of semantics), so I can't help you there.

Interestingly, I had a similar reaction when KoF told me that he'd never seen Doctor Strangelove.

I once dreamt I was adopted by Scrooge McDuck. Apparently he has a really large freezer dedicated to miles of ice cream.

It's probably not very much to do with me being young that I haven't seen Dr. Strangelove; I also haven't seen most of the stuff everyone else my age has.

This is because I'm weird.

There's a bunch of stuff that I intend to see that's relatively recent. I mean, recent anime, and also Serial Experiments Lain. (The first episode is hilarious, looking back, just for her father's whole-hearted endorsement of making internet-friends willy-nilly. Nothing bad could come of that! All of the people you meet on the internet are nice! That, and the fact that, my prickliness over at the GDL notwithstanding, I have no problems making acid jokes about her 'episodes'.)

(Oh, man. The anti-drug posters in the Nurse's office at my elementary school were all... None of us knew what acid was. We hadn't heard of it, except for, like... 'vinegar is an acid'. Those posters had me so very confused.)

(I think an important difference between me and episode-one Lain is that I don't see phone lines dripping blood.)

I googled "purple monkeys" to no relevant result (yeah, I'm sure you already tried that), but I did find this.

Sounds like this:

I guess the reason I remember them is that the series was shown on Bulgarian public TV in the early 90's.

How many of these things is it you've successfully tracked down now, Daggerstab?

Add one more.

Robot chicken recently even spoofed the Monchichis, which I remember from my misspent youth. Sigh. All those brain cells wasted remembering commercials from the late 70s to early 80s.
