False Flagging?

I've been planning on catching up on the JamesRandiFoundation YouTube Channel with videos by the Amazing one himself. And I find the account has been suspended, and videos removed due to "terms of use violations". Smells like false flagging by some woo thugs.

I don't know if you went to Thunderf00t's channel recently, but a few of the big skeptical posters were recently hit with bot attacks to lower their ratings (he posted a new list Saturday on his channel's front page of the victims). The attacks these idiots (small id, since we don't know the brand of woo yet) make is galling: arguing they want their free speech rights respected and then turning around to do this.

And here I thought Google's motto was not to be evil. They've fucked with YouTube six ways from Sunday since they bought it.

Not that I blame those dudes for selling. I would have in a heartbeat. Shit, I could live the rest of my life on $500 million, no problem.

This is what happens when you let the "masses" decide what is appropriate and what isn't without any fundamental controls.

Frankly, I second PZ's suggestion: everyone should move their videos to another service and boycott youtube entirely.

There are a ton of alternatives, though. Does anybody have specific recommendations?

It is not the masses that are doing this. Maybe this is why the CEO of Google is in the Bilderberg group. Many sites on Youtube are complaining about this.

Uh, no. It's usually some two-bit Christian fundamentalist(s) who fancies himself a hacker and makes a flagbot. Or he rallies up some friends to do it with him. Do it enough, and the account is automatically suspended by the server, no intention on YouTube's part necessary, aside from wanting to save time in responding to complaints.

Usually, if they're negligent in restoring the falsely flagged accounts, it's because the higher ups are acting on anti-atheist bigotry.

Actually, it almost certainly is the masses who are doing this: specifically, the masses of Christians and woos with vote-bots and flag-bots and false DMCA violation accusations. They've resulted in videos being deleted and accounts being suspended before, and YouTube has done little to weed out the bots.

In other words, there may very well be a conspiracy here, but all prior evidence (Ken Ham's complaints, VenomFangX, Uri Geller's people, and the countless vote-bots) suggests that it's a bottom-up one, not a top-down one.

By the way, Debra, why would the conspiracy be targeting videos from atheists and skeptics? If Lucifer's behind it all, why wouldn't the conspiracy be targeting pro-religious, pro-conspiracy videos instead of ones that encourage doubt of such claims?

How could Christians shut down youtube?
But why worry. Just be cool and youtube will be back up 100%.

Bronze Dog said...

The maintenance they're undergoing isn't related to this, and we're not talking about shutting down the whole of YouTube, just using trollish tactics to kill individual users' channels.

At the risk of causing the topic to swerve hard off the rails... I've noticed this before, Debra, but your reflexive distrust of authority is a bit... Honestly, the way you're viewing the world kind of reminds me of something that happened to me for a few years when I was young...er. What Bronze said about expectations shaped by Hollywood...

I think you've conditioned yourself to look for conspiracies. This is like... about a decade ago... Now, understand, I'm only saying all this here because my blogger nickname can't quite be linked with my real name... I watched a lot of cartoons in elementary school, with an omniscient narrator, and I came to expect that sort of thing for my own life. And if somebody's life is interesting enough to make a story about, then there has to be conflict of some kind. I never really suspected those around me of any sinister intentions, so it was like... a voice in my head, in a partially detached tone, saying that all kinds of horrible coincidences would happen. I didn't actually think I was a character... I just expected the world to act like I was.

Please don't get this associated with my full name... those missing letters make it harder to trace (I checked...), and I'm better, so I don't want anybody knowing about this...

Anyway, Debra... I think you have to understand what I came to realize... My expectations were just causing me pain, and weren't helping me get by in life. You're not approaching this rationally.

While I was typing, she replied. As did Bronze Dog. To chime in and reiterate: yes, what we are talking about is the actions of independent entities, often those associated with creationism or intelligent design, to 'game the system' that YouTube has set up. For all their talk about 'ALGORITHMS! YAY!', Google has done a piss-poor job of dealing with this kind of abuse.

(And to add a bit more relevance, in line with my earlier comment... does anybody feel one way or the other about, say, blip.tv? I mean, 'another service' is rather general. Or just... any other service?)

Captain Disillusion uses Openfiilms. It offers nice high quality videos and the comments are not 99% idiocy, like they are on Youtube.

There is also Dailymotion, which seems to be MUCH lighter on the censorship (though I don't know any atheists who use it).

Hulu does not work outside the US, so it should be avoided.

Valhar2000 said...

By the way, I meant to say that Dailymotion appears to censor lesss than Youtube; I don't know how much Openfilms censors.

Jesus fucking h Christ Debra:
How could Christians shut down youtube?

So, christian groups can be involved in the take over of THE WHOLE WORLD, but you don't see how they can shut down a website?

Why are we still humouring this person?

I think the real Debra left some time ago, and this is just an April Fool's Debra.

MWchase said...

No, it's not the Christians, because they understand about heaven and hell, and therefore are targeted by the conspiracy. Do try to keep up.

(I'm probably going to elaborate on what I was anecdoting about in a thread with relax comment rules.)

(And that is the real Debra. Her profile link reveals this.)

The account is back. Turns out the suspension was just due to legitimate copyright issues.

That's... oddly refreshing.

Bronze Dog- Saw this video today posted by NufffRespect. The title of the video is...You Tube FUBAR Phasing the You out of You Tube.

Hey Debra, why did you delete all your previous comments?

And I thought you couldn't trust the alternative media anyway?

Bronze Dog said...

I've probably seen a mirror of that video, recently. More corporations doing something stupid to grab advertising dollars.
