Miscellania

I came across this game from Nodwick.com. I've played it a total of 4 times, using different strategies each time, and what does it get me? Scores: 1280, 1290, 1280, 1289.

Here's how the game works: You build towers to fight off monsters, gaining money as you do so, which you use to build more towers or upgrade existing ones to fend off tougher and tougher waves of monsters. You lose when there are a total of 101 or more monsters on the screen.

First game: Build lots of "fast" towers, which rapidly fire generic arrows, some "slow" towers that slightly damage the enemy and slow them down.
Second game: General variety of towers.
Third game: Focus on slowing enemies down for "splash" towers that deal some area damage to ground critters. Slowing tends to group enemies together. (Including some anti-air to cover the less common flying enemies)
Fourth game: Same again, except I spend money upgrading the splash towers. (Didn't upgrade anything in the previous games)

I'm obviously missing out on some building premise for lasting longer, since I would have expected my third and fourth strategies to be more effective.

Recently read the Agony Booth reviews for Moonraker and Moonwalker. In Moonwalker, for those who don't know about it, Michael Jackson, using his star power, turns into a car, a robot, and a spaceship, as well as exhibiting other powers. Now, for some crazy reason (which may require medication), I can see it being hypothetically cool to have a movie world where simply being a celebrity brings great power (and heat vision), but the insurmountable fatal flaw in the idea is that it'll attract primarily stuck-up, pretentious stars, rather than talented ones.

And, for no reason: Lightsaber fights for no reason. (Via Matt) But remember, folks: Don't drink and use The Force. (Via my bro.)

I hate to say this, but you must be pretty bad at this game :-) I just tried the "strategy" of "buy shit and random and drop it in random places", go off and do stuff in other windows for a while, and come back and buy more random shit and drop it in random places", and I'm up to 1500 points, while it continues to pound away in another browser tab.

Strange. Anyway, just got a score of 2161 by focusing extra-hard on upgrading my splash towers.

Primarily played on my laptop, rather than my office computer. Laptop's much faster, which makes me wonder if the office comp's slowdown aided me or something.

Anyway, think that means I'm out of a funk or something.

Woo, got 1462 on the first try. I think I'll try that slow/splash strategy. I focused mainly on those huge lightning-ray thingers, but eventually that just wasn't enough. I can tell why you got stuck in that same score range 4 times, though - I *almost* died right in that wave. I barely pulled through.

Did the same thing several waves later, when the monsters got to exactly 100. Survived three more waves and then they overwhelmed me. >_<

Oh, and I'm thinking that upgrading's for chumps. The first upgrade costs as much as buying a new tower and doesn't quite double your damage. You do increase range slightly, though.

For splash towers, it definitely seems more cost-effective to just buy more of them. You should only need to upgrade when you start running out of good spaces.

Slow towers are good to upgrade, though. They'll only fire at an enemy once, it seems, so you want as much bang for your buck as possible.

Grah, 2071 this time, with an almost pure-splash strategy. A handful of slows built early then left to do their thing, and the middle island coated in anti-air to take care of the occasional wave (which still would usually take me 5-6 waves to eliminate).

I had the entire middle wall ringed in splashes. That was fun. I think I need a bit of direct damage to help out, though. Some of the Damage towers on the corners of the central isle might be just what the doctor ordered.

The verdict is clear, though. Arrow towers suck.

I tended towards upgrading because I could just put down a bunch of slows in one place and have the compacted hoard ready to be bombarded all at once. Think I'll start a game focusing on spreading this time, and another where I'll just see what happens if I go pure arrows, putting slows in the leftover single spaces.

Just spreading out a volume of slows and splashes, no upgrading: 1288. (On my laptop)

Pure, unadulterated arrows: 1571 (laptop)

Troops

An oldie, but a goodie.

1866 first try, mostly splash towers. I put a damage tower at each entrance, but I don't really know if that helped much. Quite a few slow towers too. Most were concentrated around the entrances.

Huh. You must have just had a run of bad luck. I got 2071 with a pure splash/slow strategy (with anti-air mixed in as necessary, of course). I'm assuming you went with a compact build strategy, of course - if you actually spread them out it won't be as effective. You still want them to be splashed as much as possible when they first come in, starting in the middle-ring upper corners as growing inward along the middle ring. I only placed splashes elsewhere when I absolutely could not put any more along the upper edge of the middle ring.

I didn't make it quite as far in the next game where I mixed in some damage towers, but I'm convinced they're useful. I think they'll work well placed along the bottom of the middle ring, with lots of splashes on the top of the middle ring, and slows near each entrance. That way you slow/splash the groups when they first come in and are tightly packed, once they're out of range and starting to spread out they get zapped by the damage towers. I think my problem was building too many damage towers, but they're just so sexy. >_<

I did 1750 with no strategy, and I didn't even see the instructions at the bottom, with upgrade info, until I hit around 1000.

Sorry for the double-post, but does anyone remember that Next Generation episode where the Enterprise's crew is addicted to that video game that plays in their field of vision?

Yeah, so, after playing this game a second time, I'm still seeing arrows and things crisscrossing the screen. I think I'm done with this one, wouldn't want to feel compelled to deactivate Data or attack Wesley Crusher or anything.

1793 w/ 62 creeps left 18 sec to next wave before I had to leave work to go Rockstarring. The damn flying ones really suck, but I just put a random selection around the outside edges. I think 2000 would've been easy.

/first try.

Hellooo, bunch of nerds here! Wesley was a bitch, but that was a damn fine creative episode. Thor I miss that show...

Yeah, I figured that question was mostly rhetorical :).

2422. I think I'll stop. Getting repetitive.

I'm still seeing Lumines blocks in my dreams, which involve me shinin' and shinin' and shinin' and shinin' and shinin' and shinin' and shinin' and OOOOOH-oh, why do you compaaaaare? I am silent, sexy and violent...

Notice no one's commented on the other stuff I mentioned in the post, and we're up to comment #17, now.

Obviously, you missed my link to Troops, which is a response to your lightsaber links. :P

Ok, I didn't stop. 2510 with just splash towers and a few air towers. No upgrading.

King Aardvark said...

5696 with almost exclusively damage towers distributed all along the middle wall.

Heh, want to feel smug about your superior knowledge of how interest works? Try playing it again with the new rules.

King Aardvark said...

I did, and I got 6610 or something like that. I felt pretty good until I saw that the top scores were around 22000.
