Already Time For Another Wild Thread

This has blown my mind.

This reminds me of the reaction you'll get by drawing a picture of Mohammed. Who says Christians are saner than Muslims? It just took us a little longer to find their Berserk Button.

I can only hope that this shenanigans will further emphasise the deep divisions within Christianity. The more division and in-fighting over stupid doctrinal points, the better, if you ask me (as long as they don't get to actual warfare).

Speaking of which, I see the Anglican church is working on a promising new schism...

It was recently explained to me by a devout Catholic friend that one of the reasons non-Catholics should not take Catholic communion is because of concern that Consecrated Hosts might be stolen for use in Satanic rituals. I did my best to be polite, but I find the idea kind of nutty.

I heard a similar story regarding the theft of some silver bowls and pitchers used in the Eucharist from the church I attended in my youth. There was apparently some speculation within the church that these items had been stolen for use in a Black Mass. This might overlook the more obvious explanation: that they were stolen because they are made out of silver.

Well that's about the most fucked up thing that I've read this week. And I read that one about unicorns in the Skeptics' Circle, too. Just goes to show how fucked up that one was.

Maybe not as nutty as you might think - I personally know two (independent) people who have violated graves to acquire items for magickal operations. Not "satanic" right enough, but I doubt the Catholic church would recognise the distinction.

I remember when my mother (raised a Lutheran) began taking communion at Catholic church (my dad was raised Catholic and so were we, on pain of hellfire). She had been attending quietly for years and nobody gave two shits if she stayed in the aisle during the Eucharist, but when she decided to start taking it, my dad got shitty and everyone in the church looked like they wanted to kill her.

Now she goes to a church that doesn't know she isn't Catholic and they don't seem to know the difference. Funny how that works out.

Posting this for others to see, since it's deep in PZ's thread: A post that puts things in perspective.

I was thinking of doing something like this for a while.

Another comment, since it's my blog, and I can triple post if I want ;)

Given what I've seen from the Catholic commenters to date on all of these threads, if I had never heard of Catholicism before, I would currently be holding the impression that "terrorism is permissible" is a tenet of the religion. There were only one or two who would condemn the death threats and so many more who implicitly condoned them by focusing entirely on the rudeness of calling a spade a spade and never mentioning the crimes performed.

Farscape reference I am ashamed to have forgotten when I used the word "Frell".

Oh, my Gods, why didn't that occur to me? It's only probably my favourite single Farscape episode ever.

You know, now that I think about it, I think your occasional use of the word "frell" was one of the reasons I started reading here... 'Scapers gotta stick together. ;)

Yeah. Unfortunately, I suspect I'll have to buy DVDs. Not seeing it on TV anymore. It was on WB/CW for a while, had my DVR set to record it all, but I never caught the first episode. They showed Peacekeeper Wars on Sci-Fi during a 'miniseries month' but I was only able to get the first part.

PK Wars suffers from much the same problems as Serenity - they tried to cram an entire season's worth of plot into 2.5 hours, with the result that it really doesn't hang together that well. Still, you've gotta see it just to see how it all turns out...
