...Club Soda, Maybe?

Trivial meatspace post: I've got a smell in my apartment my mother describes as "musty." I'm currently doing an overall cleaning in an effort to get rid of it. Though since I'm used to living here, it's hard for me to notice. Any suggestions?

1. Sprinkle some sodium bicarbonate around your carpet, vacuum and repeat.

2. Check walls near the floorline for flaky or bubbled paint. Could be rising damp.

3. Get a bottle of tonic (called 'Indian tonic water' in some places) and a bottle of Tanqeray Gin. Mix 1 part gin with 4 parts tonic in a low tumbler glass, then add a handful of ice and drink. Repeat process until the smell ceases to bother you.

4. Stop playing WoW, open some windows and air out your nerd lair. Fucking nerds always playing WoW ;)

Everything can be solved with explosives.

As a long term solution more ventilation would be a good idea. In fact this is a good idea anyway, moisture buildup can do some very unpleasant things to a building. First you get a musty smell, then mildew then before you know it the gib board in the walls starts going to powder.

I can't find any sort of water-related problems, and the apartment was refurbished shortly after I moved in.

I mean shortly before I moved in.

This solution is probably the best one. Except you want a LARGE tumbler glass.;)
Have you thought that the musty smell might be gabe hiding in a cupboard somewhere?:(

Well, as you do not give any specifics, could only guess mold?

Depending on where it is, say you have a carpet in the entire apartment, then you may have a problem that could arise later on (which you would notice by headaches and "sickness").

Another, more likely, cause is that if you have a carpet its grown in "musty smell", and as you live there you adapted to it but anyone else coming would feel it like a brick wall.

If no carpet, mold may be the logical answer, in walls or sink?

Steps I would take:
1. Vacuum thoroughly and use some Carpet Fresh stuff.
2. If you have a garbage disposal, drop some orange/lemon peels (or a chopped up lemon) down it and run (with water) for a bit.
3. Check vents and drains for mold and/or water.
4. Check the ceiling, too: I had problems with mold in my last apartment, and part of it was remedied by cleaning the walls & ceiling with bleach.
5. Clean out the fridge.
6. Shampoo the carpet.
7. Febreze everything.
8. Buy a decent air freshener or two.
9. Talk to the neighbors/landlord about it. The smell might be due to your neighbors or to the complex itself.

I second the various mould-related suggestions. However, you can normally tell if a place has mould issues: every morning you wake up feeling like your throat is coated with paintstripper.

(I know this from personal experience after accidentally leaving a damp sports towel in a bag in a cupboard for three weeks.)
