Pointless Question #15

There's an army of mooks breathing down your back as you work your way through the villain's lair. The manage to corner you at a dead end. So why are they only coming at you one or two at a time?

1) Because they're under a geas and can only face an enemy one or two at a time however much they wish to gang up on him.

2) The corridor's only wide enough for one or two people to maneuver effectively.

or

3) They're macho twits.

It's the "too many cooks in the kitchen" mentality. The more guys that pile on you, the more chance that they'll get in each other's way and hurt themselves instead of you.

Besides, the opposite is no better. If they all dogpiled on top of you, you'd invariably crawl out from beneath them and sneak away without them noticing. Haven't you ever watched any movies?

No there's a variation. You dramatically throw them ALL off of you at once in a big show of power.

I would like to see them phalanx at least once. I mean if they are a bunch of ninjas with swords, aim forward, and everone march forward.

...its because they're shy....

Conservation of Ninjitsu. The trick is, when X mooks are attacking simultaneously, their skill is 1/X for each of them. Since an experienced hero has no problem taking out many opponents with small skill quickly (see previous comments for methods), they stand a better chance if they come at you one at a time. This gives each one maximum skill and allows the chance that eventually the hero will be worn down by the end. That's when the really big mook comes out to finish the job.
