I'm on YouTube

Fairly simple introduction:

My mental voice for you is ruined! =(

Figured that was acceptable, since I may have done that back in a phone-in Skeptics' Circle with a Ghostbusters theme.

If it's any consolation, I ruined my own mental voice for me.

My mental voice has been ruined for me since I produced the school TV show for two years in high school.

Then I did radio for two years in college. I'm permanently inured to the weirdness of hearing my own voice.

Try ruining your own mental singing voice next. It will scare you away from karaoke and sing-along forever.

I figure I should try fixing that, since I know I can do better...

Back on topic, it looks like a good start.

(You certainly changed my mental voice for you, but since I'm a MassaCaliFloridian, it's not like I was imagining your voice particularly accurately anyway.)

Did that in high school, too, when I had a friend film me and another friend playing Weezer's "Island in the Sun" on a guitar and digeridoo, respectively, in front of a Wal-Mart (shortly before we got kicked out). Then just a few months ago my brother recorded a couple of tracks for me. I've much improved in the last 7 or 8 years.

BD, the thing that most struck me (now that I've watched the video) is your lack of anything resembling a Texas accent. Especially since your brother had a bit of one in his blasphemy challenge a couple of years ago.

Didn't notice one on his part, but I guess it's in comparison to some of the thicker ones I've heard locally.

Not sure why I didn't pick one up. Guess it might have been my TV tendencies.

Well, your bro's wasn't exactly screaming at me, but it was different enough from my own Midwestern newscaster that it stood out a bit.

My own history is one where my speech patters are definitely affected by where I live, and living in Indiana has not been kind to them.

Of course, it also depends on who I'm talking to, what I'm talking about, and how I'm trying to communicate.

I thought there was a bit of something. Compare to some of my more distant cousins (from Tennessee, fwiw) thinking that I sounded 'European'...

Yeah... might have ODed on the Monty Python just a tiny bit. I mean, I think of my accent as GA, but I'll admit weird things happen to it sometimes. (... I made a recording to check, once.) I also think of it as loud and assertive, and it's... not. Skulls have amazing acoustics, yes?

(Of course, the only MassaCaliFloridian thing I picked up was calling one of my friends a "poor flower" (gotten from my southern grandmother) over the fact that he's such a sensitive guy that he practically has a harem.)

See, now I'm going to have to do something. I can't let you have all the fun.

I've wanted to do a podcast for a while, I'm just not sure (a)what equipment I'd need, exactly or (b)what the hell I'd talk about that would be different from my blog.

Maybe a place to start would be videotaping and the posting on YouTube the skeptical panel that Tom Foss and Wikinite and I are planning on doing at Gen Con in 2009.

Hey BD, how did you put that movie together? Might be interesting to mess with whatever movie programs there are and see if I could make something half-decent.

Personally, I ruined my own mental voice when I started talking on Ventrilo while playing WoW. My own voice gets reflected back at me sometimes when I'm talking.

I just used Windows Movie Maker, which was thankfully free.

King of Ferrets said...

Does that come with my Vista-running laptop?

I miss XP...

King of Ferrets said...

Nevermind, I found it. Now I just have to figure out how to record my voice to import to it.

Bronze Dog said...

Try a search for "Windows Movie Maker". Or did they remove the search function?

I found mine hiding in plain sight in the start menu list of programs.

Bronze Dog said...

They have a "narration" selection that'll let you record.

King of Ferrets said...

I also found mine hiding in plain sight.

Thanks, that'll help. Maybe I can migrate to YouTube as well.

Personally, I'm not a fan of sound only youtube. I submit that you should do it with video wearing a luche libre wrestling mask.

Or with face in shadow and an undertone of malice. (Perhaps, that should be my approach to a series? Eh, I'll leave it up for grabs.)

I must have missed this. It was a great introduction to the blog, BD. And may I just say that to my untrained ears, your voice sounds (to me, anyway) very much like a nature documentary narrator.

Perhaps you could follow this up with sweeping shots of arctic tundra, glaciers calving, meerkats running around and slow motion footage of a cheetah taking down an antelope.
